I'm interested in starting my own event planning company, but not sure about where to start.

You'll eventually have to deal with both. It's whomever calls you to plan their event so be ready. They can both be fun and challenging. Your clients will run the gamut of very nice and easy to work with and so close minded and budget ignorant that you'd rather they go to someone else for planning. Just be prepared with plans for every situation if possible. Have good relationships with more than one DJ, Florist, caterer, etc. Make friends so that you know who you can go to in a pinch and you know who will give you the real deal when they're pinching pennies and trying to make them look like dimes.

Honestly I like both. The small private ones are of course more personal and very touching, but the big corporate ones give you LOTS to talk about later :-) The drawback to the small ones can be that the client can sometimes pay attention to too many details, you know? Sometimes it's too much. The drawback to the corporate ones are the guests get more drunk and rude to the DJ and wait staff. Either way you've helped people celebrate something and that's cool, isn't it?

good luck!

I think that depends on the circumstances. Since you're asking this in the small business section, I am assuming it's for marketing and networking purposes.

Personally, I like smaller, more intimate parties. It gives you a chance to mingle with other people (people you feel were important enough to make the list) and network better, if that's the goal. It also really helps people who are shy get a chance to add their two cents to the party. If I had to do a larger corporate event, I don't believe I would be able to give the best personal experience to each guest, and I wouldn't get a chance to show people what kind of person I really am. I would just be showing them a glimpse of someone who is too busy to offer personal service. It's a good image if you want people to think you are popular and busy, but not so good if you want the people to really get to know you and want to meet with you again.

Hope this helps.
