I think the word patriotism originated with the French revolution and is usually accompanied by hatred and violence of one sort or another.

To believe that your nation is the best is to also believe that every other is inferior. All nations are equal but some are more equal than others, or something like that.

Common get real, if you honestly don't believe that the Americans and the French, among others, don't think they're better than everyone else then you're in denial.

Absolutely not. A patriot is against any person or group that wishes harm to his nation. His actions are not based in race. I will agree that some bigots will attempt to hide their bigotry under the guise of patriotism. Its a lot more acceptable to attribute the acts of hatred against middle easterners as a patriotic response to terrorism than it is to admit that you just plain dont like the way they look, think, talk, etc. A patriot sees a man with a bomb, a racist sees a man in a turban. But the racist was racist long before he had an excuse to use for it. A patriot recognizes that Tim Mcvey was just as evil as Osamma been Hidin' is, and that having dark skin or wearing a turban doesn't make a man evil.

Some opinions from a patriot, like keeping mexicans from crossing our borders seem racist to most idiots. But, if they were a bit brighter they would understand that these same patriots would more than welcome another tax paying documented citizen into our free country. The problem is that these immigrants are : Key word coming>>>>>>>>ILLEGAL!!!

But, because white people made a mistake by enslaving black people, anything we say or do now that has anything to do with race we must put our tails between our legz because we should be so incredibly ashamed of actions our ancestors took

In a homogenous country such as.... well, most of them.... it can. When the country is identified with a single race, there is indeed that possibility. The United States is not homogenous, so only a racist could think that patriotism equates with racism here.

Well... only if you lived in a country that was 100% one race. Then you could see outsiders and recognize them immediately by their different race. In countries like the USA and the UK, however, where many of the citizens are from all different races? No.

Well, if you take the war in the middle east and the rally for patriotism in the U.S. against the "islamofasicsts", then yes in an aspect.

Do you think Americans with middle eastern characteristics in the U.S. aren't treated differently since 9/11?

No .In the U.S. for example there are millions of people of different race who refer to them selves as Patriots..However racist can and do hide behind, patriotism, but they don't understand the difference between patriotism and nationalism !

No, PATRIOTISM is about national identity, not racial identity. Considering our nation in particular is made up of all races, it's pretty hard to claim being pro-American is anti-anyone else.

how would patriotism beget racism in you opinion to begin with? with patriotism, you do not look at what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. (jfk)

no...

love of country is just that...nothing more..nothing less... and you should love the country you choose to stay in...or find a place on the planet you might be happier...then of course...you would love your country..and all is right with the world...

racists are racists...they judge based on color, religion, national origin, sex...and they come in all nationalities...ignorance knows no bounds...
