When a dental patient gets an abscess, they are given antibiotics to take, to knock out the infection (& pain) before any work is done. This may take a few days. They won't do any work with an active infection, because of the health risks.

Some dentists are trained to use 1 or more methods to help patients who are frightened of dental proceedures:
sedation, general anesthesia, or EFT. The prior is extremely effective, & usually a general anesthetic (which is both more expensive, and potentially more dangerous) is not necessary for even the ' most squeemish'. EFT is relatively unknown, but done properly, appears to have lasting effects, & is the safest.

If the abscess is big and tense enough causing severe pain the doctor may put you to sleep. But punching him is not possible . While opening an abscess under local anesthesia they immobilise the part.

They can, if the doctor is licensed to do it. Most doctors however will treat the abcess first with antibiotics, then after the infection is cleared take care of the tooth.

My boyfriend gets them weekly and has gotten so used to popping them himself. 6 months ago he got a 1 inch abscess on his hip and we went to the emergeny room, they gave him a shot in the area to numb it so you can't feel anything. Then they POP away!
