So you can get arrested for it and the courts can make money off you.

That's a good question. To clarify, its drunk driving that is illegal. You can still drink and drive up to a certain limit. And there are parking lots for a variety or reasons, such as many bars are also restaurants, and because if there were no parking lots then there would be no need for designated drivers.

Because "drinking and driving" really only means driving while drunk or driving while drinking (like having a beer in one hand and the steering wheel in the other).

You can drink, but your alcohol level cannot be above a certain limit, which varies by state, I think.

Otherwise everyone would break the law anyway. You may as well ban alcohol all together if you couldn't drink any and then drive.

Damn good question Christopher and also ironic. We all know people are going to drive their cars to bars and pretty much always go over their limit and then get behind the wheel and get tossed in jail for DUI or worse, kill themselves or some innocent person.
It is obvious that one of the biggest mistakes that our government made back in the 20's was to repeal prohibition. Think of all of the millions of people since, that have suffered, died because of alcohol, booze is just as addicting as dope, my Dad died at a young age because of booze. If all of the "Cause Celebre People would get booze outlawed, they would really do something for all of us instead of "Global Warming and saving some varmints.

By the way I was a drinker for a long time but came to my senses, of course Im still paying for it with health issues but it's never too late as long as yer breathing.

"Drinking and driving" is slang for what is officially termed "Driving Under the Influence." It's perfectly legal to have a beer or a martini and drive, as long as you aren't intoxicated.

Still, mass transit would ease the situation, wouldn't it?

To promote business. Its your choice to get drunk...thats not illegal (if your old enough). Its your choice to drive drunk which is legal and the bar has no control over your actions.

that is a stupid question, drunk driving and drinking while driving is illegal but having a drink then driving is not illegal.
