Reptiles were laying eggs long before chickens came onto the scene. Now if you want to know if it was the chicken egg or the chicken that came first, you would - by definition - need a chicken to lay that chicken egg.

Otherwise, you just have to look at evolution. I suppose that it had to be the egg because that's how each new species was born until it became the chicken.
