You do NOT hire an agent. If the agent is interested in your screenplay, his office will accept you as a client. As a former talent agent, I can tell you, do not expect to be accepted, unless your script is well-written and very original.

You'll have a hard time selling your screenplay with an agent. Without one, it's going to be even more difficult.

What's more, if you don't know the difference between "kneed" and "need", you probably need to hire an editor before an agent will give you the time of day.

It's not that Hollywood studios want intelligent scripts. They haven't made a dozen movies from intelligent scripts in the past five decades. It's just that the agent can't possibly take on every unpublished wannabe that has a stack of paper with ink on it. He can't even take on every *published* wannabee who thinks he can write a script. You'll need a way to sell him on the script in less than ten seconds - and keep him sold until he's read enough of it to think it has potential.
