I have bought a bought a bond in different face value e.g. 1000 lacs, 280 lacs, 220 lacs, 180 lacs etc at different rate e.g. 102.10, 102.20, 103.10, 104.50. In this case how could I find the avereage cost for my total purchase ?

I think you're looking for a weighted average price. If lacs are in column A, and rates in column B, this formula will calculate the weighted average:

=SUM(A2:A100*B2:B100) / SUM(A2:A100)

You input this using Ctrl-Shift-Enter (rather than just Enter), since it's an array formula.

There are different avarages. Lets assume you want average per dollar of face value. So the average must be the total cost divided by the total face value.
So you need to sum two columns (one for face value and one for cost)..if thats what you mean by price

Go to an empty cell and type

"=average("

then click each cell or range of cells you want to average, then type

")"

and press Enter.
