I try to wait before buying it. If I can leave the store without it, I usually can talk myself out of buying it altogether.

Do what I do. Make a list of the stuff you want to buy. Sort the items out according to how much you need or want it. Then when you have money, you could buy the item according to the list, add items to the list that you want, or think of the list (and the stuff you would rather buy instead) every time you get a frivolous desire to splurge on something you really don't need.

So, right now, I want to save up and buy more RAM for my laptop. When I ever get a desire to spend on cheap but unimportant junk, I just think about the list and how I could be saving for the more important items.

Works for me!

The source have some really great articles on this and other related topics.

Before going shopping have a clear picture in your mind of what you want and how much you are prepared to pay.
Have the discipline to stay inside your limits.
Shop for what you need, not to impress
You end up
Buying things you don't need
With money you haven't got
To impress people you don't like

If it's clothes go to Mervyns not Nordstoms or other high priced stores and the clothes still look just as nice. If it's food go to Winco or Savemart.

Don't buy it!
Tell yourself that if you still want it in 5 days, then you will get it!.
Remind yourself that the item will just add clutter to your home.
I used to be like you, but now I like knowing I still got my money.
