I think common sense makes a smart person. There are plenty of intelligent folk with high IQ's who are really DUMB. The sad thing about common sense is that it ain't too common!

A person is the product of genes and environment. Indeed the difference in genes can make a person smarter than another by birth..... however, this difference can not be too large.
Environment is a huge influence that modifies, develops and reshapes genetic characteristics..... environment influences a person through experiences with events and people interactions as life goes on.
Nevertheless, both genes and environment just make for the potential for smartness.... this potential may or may not be fully harnessed by the individual and this is where a major difference arises between two people in terms of smartness or cleverness or intelligence or intellect or whatever. I wouldn't subscribe to this 99% sweat theory.... I think there are people who are smarter and therefore need to sweat much less than many others in order to achieve the same objective or goal......... extent of sweating necessary depends on level of smartness and therefore level of smartness can not change through sweating.... it is slightly different even at birth.... difference widens further due to life experiences.... and a major difference can develop based on how well those experiences are utilized for the purpose of sharpening and applying smartness.
Every rule has some exceptions and we do get genius once in a while.... the word genius suggests gene-based, but that sort of exception is extremely rare as all of us know.

Many interesting answers. Yes, there are "smart people", in the common sense, but it does depend on your perspective. I concur that IQ alone is not defining--it takes application of the potential to reach fruition. Inquisitiveness and hard work are also good building blocks towards achieving maximum potential. Paying attention to the wisdom and foibles of others is key; learning how to communicate effectively is also a great part of intelligence--including the oft-neglected art of listening.
A truly "smart" person, in my book, is one who has combined all of the above, becomes educated, reads frequently, understands history and the current geopolitics, speaks well of others, and is polite in all circumstances. Intelligence without wisdom is not "smart".

What do you make of smart? Book smart? People smarts? I think it's confidence, knowing right from wrong, having the guts to do right from wrong even if it's not as easy. Smart is personal, one person can be as smart as another but not nearly as smart as someone else about the same thing. You are right about IQ, it's not always the truth, haha. Interesting question.

Smarts refer to a quickness in logistical or mathematical conclusions. Even when referring to social situations.
Diligence is Hard work and Inquisition.
Intelligence is a mixture of many qualities including creativity, analysis, and conceptualizing
Wisdom is gained from either life experience or deep philosophical understanding - often present in young children who have not yet reached a opinionated view of the world.
Learned (pronounced Learn-ed) would refer to academics.
and skilled are "how-to" talents.
None of these mental abilities are mutual exclusive and what actually constitutes scientific intelligence still alludes scientists. Beyond the basic idea of number and speed of calculations.

I do believe that some people are born with the potential to be more intelligent than others. (Some people just don't have a lot to work with!) However, a person's actions also affect his/her intelligence. For instance, a person who uses a bunch of drugs that burn brain cells, never reads a book, doesn't care about learning anything, could have been born with great potential but I would by no means call him/her intelligent. Someone who has average intelligence, but reads, wants to learn about a variety of subjects, etc., is going to end up more intelligent, in my book.

It depends on your definition of smartness. There are different types of smart. Math smart, socially smart, mechanical smartness, book smart, common sense smart, general smartness. analytical smartness, emotional smartness, and so on.
I don't think there is a person on the planet who was or every will be completely smart.
