Sadly, we'll never know. But let's look at his stats.

Gwynn last saw .400 on 15-May when he finished the day at .408; he went 0-3 in the next game to drop to .398.

His low AVG for the rest of the season was .376 (08-June); when he moved back above .380, he only dipped below that mark for one day the rest of the season.

His high after the .376 low was .394 on 11-Aug, when the season ended. He spent most of the time, a little over two months, in the high .380s or low .390s, and he was going strong, but there was no clear sign of a push higher.

So many factors could play -- would he have begun tiring in the summer heat? Would he have faced raw kid pitchers in September and eaten their stuff? Would the media coverage -- and there would have been plenty -- been too distracting, or inspiring? We cannot know. There was about 50 games left to play, and though having a .400 season in living memory would have been wonderful, I suspect he would have fallen short -- not agonizingly short, like one or two hits and three points, but George Brett-short -- close, .390ish, but clearly it wasn't meant to be. Still would have been great fun to watch though.

It's possible. He almost always managed to hit the ball, having struck out only 4.6% of the time averaged out over his career. If the ball bounced his way a few times he could have pulled it out. I believe he came the closes to .400 since George Brett's run for .400 in 1980.

Possibly, and the Expos might have won the World Series.
