I live here. It's like a smaller New York but clumped into less space.
Powell has the High-end shopping-Saks, Macy's, Nordstrom, Armani, Dior, Chanel etc.
China Town is fun. There's one in Oakland too.
The Castro has all the gays
Civic Center has an Opera and Asian Arts Museum, The Ballet, City Hall, And Nearby is where the UN was formed and now homeless central-stretching into the prox Tenderloin.
Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley is a little more relaxed shopping wise.
Haight and Ashbury, the infamous 60's hippie locale is now overridden with punks.
I like Golden Gate park more than central park. It's a way out but the muni does go there.
There are tons of night clubs, although because of all the theme nights it's a good idea to choose early. Some are toe-up notoriously asian gang-bang wannabees.
And of course all the gay bars are packed with Straight people looking for a freak show, depending on the night.
However, they are often the most smoker friendly with Balcony's
The End-up is opern till 10:00 am on the weekends.
The best view of the city (IMO) is the Southwest corner of Dolores Park.
Check out SFMOMA, the museum of modern art. And Yerba Beuna Gardens. (South Market and Powell). There's also the Metreon which is a super pimped out (overpriced) movie theatre. But it's fun to go in and look at the view from the top floor.

It is a big city. Crowded and noisy. But San Fran, unlike most big U.S. cities has character. Offers virtually anything you could want to do. Food, theater, sport, recreation, street art. One of the most exciting and interesting cities in the world.
P.S. I live over 60 miles from the nearest town, population 2400. And 110 miles from a city. I hate cities. I love visiting San Francisco.

San Francisco rocks. I go once a year, just to get out of the OC. I can not think of any reasons not to go.

i was there about 6 yrs. ago in august and i'll be back next month and i loved it, especially the weather.it has the typical big city feel to it but the thing that impressed me the most was the air. i live in d.c. and the air is terrible in the summer time even at 5 in the morning.but out there it's crisp and clean. honestly i didn't want to come back home.
