My friend told me that lightning does more damage when the ground near you is striked then when you are striked. I was wondering exactly why this was. I was also wondering, if it makes a difference to the effects on your body if you where on super turf ( fake grass) compared to real grass dirt or concrete. Also if you where holding a metal object when the ground near was struck by lightning what would happen?

If you were directly hit by a bolt of lightning and all the current (several million amps) passed through your body, you would be partially vaporized. On the other hand, if lightning hit the ground 5 meters away from you, you might escape with only minor burn injuries.

Arguing that it's better to be hit by lightning is like arguing you're safer to detonate a grenade in your hand. Further away is always better.
