I was going to get a lot of rainbowfish for my new 58 gallon (3 foot) tank, but after looking at the prices of the rainbows, I've decided to cut down on them a little so I need ideas for other, fairly cheap (like $5 and lower-around $3 per fish being the best price) fish I could put into my tank. Here is what I have so far:

5 Peppered Cories
8 Flame Tetras
2 Blue Rams
2 Apistos (not sure which ones...but they're just the assorted ones on liveaquaria).

So...any ideas? I don't really have anything in mind...I'm open to pretty much everything, except I'd prefer to have something that's not in one of my other tanks (but I can make exceptions), inexpensive, fairly hardy, compatible with the above fish, and available in either my LFS or liveaquaria.com. I have a jewel cichlid, swordtails, guppies, harlequin rasboras, male and female bettas, bloodfins, white clouds, dwarf gourami, zebra danios, and pristella tetras.

I need as many ideas as possible and all the help I can get!!! Thanks!

Kuhli loaches are too much like yoyo loaches...and they probably get cranky with old age too. Yoyo loaches aren't appropriate for the community aquarium I'm planning, so I'd assume Kuhli loaches aren't either. Thanks though! :)

Also...I mentioned that I am not purchasing rainbows, as they are too expensive for my budget at the moment. I also forgot to mention that for some reason, the only fish I seem to kill easily are neons/cardinals, so those are also out. Angelfish are not a good idea, since I already have two pairs of cichlids (which will get along fine with enough caves--I'm putting 15 in) in the tank already.

I think I confused some people--the other fish that I listed off are in different tanks--for instance, the jewel cichlid is in a 10 gallon by himself and all the others are in random tanks, from 10 gallons, to a 15, to a 20L to a 29. Also, Madagascar rainbows are too expensive for me (I can't pay more than $5 per fish...I'd rather be around $3).

I had never even heard of peacock gudgeons, but I did a little Googling, and I can't find a price--but they were selling a 6" one online (auction) and the final price was $40...that's a little (lot!) out of my price range...I would like fish around $1-$5 please!

Kuhli loaches are not aggressive at any point in their lives, and have very little in common with the Yo-Yo's as far as personality goes. Having said that, have you tried the peacock gudgeons? Even if your LFS doesn't have them, they can order them. I sell fish to fish stores, so I know I can get them to the store, and we have them in stock. Your jewel cichlid will eat all of your guppies eventually, and will probably wipe out the rest of your tank as well. I would find a new home for it ASAP. Keep it, and you will regret it. Jewels are much more aggressive than any Yo-Yo. Madagascar rainbows are usually not very expensive, and neither are the common Australians. The common Australian is beautiful as an adult. You could also put in gold, cherry, and rosie barbs.

How about Kuhli Loaches? They get about 4 inches long and have striking black and orange striping patterns. It kinda looks like a worm, but it's personality is nicer. If you keep them in groups (3+ preferably 4), you will see them a lot more often. Good luck!

Edit:
Well, don't assume! Kuhli Loaches never get cranky (nor do Yo-yo Loaches when kept properly). They don't have anything they could attack a fish with either. Just because you had a bad experience with one Loach doesn't mean they're all the same. Does that mean if you had one bad teacher in high school, you would automatically think all teachers were bad?

By the way, thanks for giving us all thumbs down. You know, people really hate it when they try to help (and all give good suggestions), but they only have half the story. If you are going to ask a question, tell us all the specifics, don't expect us to read your mind. That said, if you are this picky to find a $3 fish, maybe fish aren't your thing. You got plenty of good suggestions, and shot them all down. You also jumped to conclusions on the Kuhli Loach (without doing any research) and didn't even give the Gudgeon a chance.

Also, the Rams are going to cost you a lot more than $5... try closer to $12 for juveniles and $15-$20 for adults.

try looking at a gouramie,

moonbeam gouramies are becomming harder and harder to find these days but if you can find them, they will be worth it.

They have a lovely blue tint and not too aggressive, will get about 5-7 inches. They will mix well with rainbows.

58 gallons isnt really that much room, so i would be looking at one center fish, along with the fishes you metioned your going to get.

Certainly gouramies would be a good center fish for that sizes tank, but what about an angelfish. They will get larger, but are common with rams in shower tank setups.

If you choose to go with an angel, the next common fish that follows that fish is a dwarf oto catfish school which will clean the algae.

But try looking at panda cories, Very popular in AU, but getting there in the USA. Schooling small, and good bottom fish.

The thing about your stocking that is bothering, is the rams and the apistos. Generally i wouldnt mix them, but thats just me.

Instead of the peppered cories, i would go with the panadas.

for a 58, my final stockign list would be the following:
5 panda cories,
7 cardinals,
1 angelfish ( or 2 moonbeam gouramies)
2 rams or 2 apisto,
4 red rainbowfish,
4 boesoman rainbows.

That would be my advice.
