so i'm looking for the cheapest way to get from minneapolis, mn to sydney, australia in november or december. all the prices i've looked at so far have been like $1900+ for roundtrip. this seems rather pricey.
is this a reasonable? are there cheaper ways to get there? good dates to travel? maybe flying into another australian city and then taking a train/bus to sydney?

any advice? no generic travel websites please unless its really something special.

i'm trying to use northwest airlines because i have a $500 credit there.

I'd check Air New Zealand for your international flight - try to get your domestic through northwest (should be easy with your credit) and then look into ANZ for the LA - SYD flight. It connects via Aukland NZ. I just bought tickets in Nov/Dec for this year for $1425 AUD per ticket plus taxes - worked out to just over $3000 US for 1 adult and two kids. The ANZ website is easy to use and has a price guarrantee.

I don't think any of the NW partners do a good US - Sydney route. Korean Air is all via Korea, and I don't know that they codeshare with NW for those flights anyway.

Go thru one of the Asian carriers via Tokyo, Hong Kong etc, usually cheap flights that way. If you fly out of L.A. across the Pacific then you pay, plus it is busy season Nov and Dec in Australia. Check out JAL or Korean air maybe one of those guys, they have at times very cheap deals, not sure if that is compatible with Northwest though.

December is peak season for flights to Australia so you won't find too many cheap flights.

1900 is about as cheap as you will get especially for DEC Australian high season
