You basically just keep it on when youre not using it...

I usually just cover it up at night and open it up when im about to go swimming, leaving it open all day long.

If you are using it to infuse heat, depending on the amount of gallons of water I would say quite a while,if there is such a product that realistically works. Most people use a pool blanket to hold heat in at night and keep debris out. Some use it to keep the water from heating up to much when not in use. I guess i don't know what your trying to accomplish. Most covers just float on the top and are secured at a few spots on the perimeter. ex pool man

There is no prescribed amount of time you have to wait. It's purpose is to keep out debris and warm the water. You can remove the cover whenever you feel the temperature is comfortable enough to swim in.

I will just add that depending on where you live you may not want to leave it on too long during the heat of the day.
We are in Louisiana and we left ours on too long and it felt like bath water. Not exactly refreshing!

That is exactly what you do =] Wait a day or two and check the temperature. You'll definitely notice a change.

Place on top of the water, bubbles down.
Leave there for as long as possible.
The longer it is on, the warmer it will be.
