I paid for a 20 week scan because in Edinburgh you don't get one on the NHS and I found out i was having a girl. I was able to name her before she was born and strongly believe I was able to bond with her a lot more before she came. We called her by her name before she came instead of 'it' or 'the baby'. that was a couple of years ago and was just a 2d scan but my sister had a 3d scan done when she was pregant this year and we were all able to go, it was an amazing experience! My sister has the pictures and DVD that she will be able to show her daughter when she grows up! When we found out the sex of our babies, we were able to prepare a lot better because we didn't just need to buy unisex coloured clothes etc.
I think if a lot more women found out the sex of their babies, there would be a lot Less cases of post natal depression. It was a lot easier for me to talk to my baby in my tummy when I found out she was a girl!
It's completely up to you! It would still be a wonderful surprise, just a couple of months earlier! It doesn't make the birth of your baby an less special I promise you that!
Congratulations and I wish you all the best! :)

If you can afford it then I'd say go with the DVD, they are pretty cool. My friend went for a private scan so she could find out her baby's gender and they couldn't see it properly so this cool nurse (who I think felt bad as my friend had forked out the money specifically to find out the gender) flicked the switch on the snazzy machine so it did 3D/4D (whatever the hell they are) pictures and they saw what the gender was and my friend got her first peak at her daughter. She says it was magical. I think it sounds awesome. She never got a picture of a DVD though (she wasn't even supposed to have seen the 3D/4D picture on the screen).

In regards of the gender, personally I would be desperate to know and would try my hardest to find out so I could be organised (name, clothes, decorations etc.). It's a personal thing but I think the whole "don't you want a surprise?" is a load of bunkum, I mean it's still a little person you've never met, and you're going to be surprised by how much you're going to fall in love at first sight and that's the biggest surprise anyway.
I would if I were you.

Shoot... if you can afford it without cutting the budget go for it. But, maybe if you have any medical schools nearby you could see if they do them.... with my last baby a college near us was teaching students how to do 4D ultrasounds... and I volunteered to be a guine pig for them.... despite having about a dozen and a half people standing around me and poking and proding my belly and having to listen to a lot of "doctor talk" it was amazing... and free! Never hurts to check into it... It's actually more common than one would think it'd be.

If you want to know... do it... so you know if it's a boy or girl... big deal you still have that overwhelmingly too wonderful for words birth to look forward to. The emotion that comes over you when you see your child for the first time will so overtake you that you almost won't even care if he's a he or she's a she!

Good Luck and God Bless!
