The BATF led attack was poorly planned and went on even though secrecy had been blown. They needed the good publicity soon if they had any hope of getting Congress to approve the budget they wanted. The FBI was called in to professionalize the operation and they needed time to cover up the evidence of misdoings by the BATF. The propaganda issued made members of the long-established offshoot of the Adventist religion into cultists which meant their children were being held "hostage". To keep the public on their side, they had to appear to be trying to negotiate the release of their children and that took time. When the final assault from helicopter-borne machine guns and poison gas from the APCs (they were NOT tanks) that totally ignored the safety of the children happened, it was over quickly and curiously, one day prior to the end of the period set by a judge for the Dravidians to continuously occupy their church/school for it to become their property.
The saddest part of this is that their so-called prophet invited the BATF in when he learned of their attack plans to prove that their allagations were wrong. The group had a history of complete cooperation with authorities.

Because a craven, little coward hid behind children while their equally gutless, cultist parents stood by. If this lowlife had surrendered and faced the charges against him like a man, or his followers had put the welfare of their friends and families above their religious dementia, it would have been over safely and in a matter of minutes.

I wonder too. I believe they should of consulted people on what would be the best solution to ending it. Besides they used tanks and cut off the electricity to the building further causing what happened.

I guess they were trying to give Koresh (sp) the opportunity to come out/surrender. Lord only knows why it happened to begin with. Tanks moving on American citizens--I couldn't believe it.

The government hoped to talk the people into surrendering. They didn't.
