There are chickens running wild that escaped from a house down the road. I was told that the owners were a married couple and the guy was cheating on his wife so she shot and killed the girl he cheated with and the animals were taken away afterward. The chickens got loose and were never taken. About 10 of them are running wild out in the woods including a rooster. There are only 5 left and they roost ontop of my mothers broken down van and are making a mess of it. I called the SPCA and they said "We do not have the facilities to take them. Try catching them and putting an ad in the paper for free chickens." They are not mine so I dont want to get in trouble for giving them away and my mom is becoming attached to them like pets. They lay eggs all over the place and crap on the van. Sure they eat some of the bugs but they are attracting large black snakes to the yard as well.

How can I get them to take them away? I know they took neglected horses once so why not chickens?

If the husband still lives there, you could ask him. If the original owners are gone, do whatever you want. Build your mom a chicken coop, and let her keep them as pets, or place a free ad on craigslist. Good luck catching them.

As for the ASPCA, I found a few links on a Yahoo search for "ASPCA chickens"

If the chickens were not being abused, and were in good health they wouldn't have had any reason to remove them. The ASPCA rescues animals who's lives are in jeopardy, and does not have the room to accomodate all of the abused or neglected chickens, let alone house and feed a flock of free-range chickens.

You might want to look online and see if there is an animal sanctuary in your area that will take chickens. I'm surprised the SPCA would tell you to give them away. Is there a Humane Society in your area (ASPCA and Humane Society are two different organizations)? They may not be able to take the chickens, but they should be able to direct you to a place that can care for them.

You might try calling your local county animal shelter. When they accept county funds for their organization they have to take animals regardless of the species. Most county animal shelters have contacts that are willing to take animals to their own home so they are not kept in the local shelter itself mixed with dogs and cats. If by some chance you are refused at the local county animal shelter, call or write your local newspaper and complain like hell. There usually always is a good samaritan in town that would be happy to help you out with the problem. If your not sure how to contact the county animal shelter call your local police and talk with the dispatcher to get the phone number. Be persistent and good luck.
