On page 590 (bottom of the page), Amycus says to Alecto 'D'you want to go the same way as the Malfoys?', which would imply the Malfoys are dead. I'm assuming he's referring to the incident where Voldemort found out about the break-in at Gringotts. However, on page 549, it says 'Bellatrix and Lucius Malfoy threw others behind them in their race for the door', right after the goblin was killed. I would assume that in the few seconds after the goblin was killed, Voldy wouldn't have time to kill /everyone/ in the room, and that sentence implied that Lucius and Bella made it to the door rather quickly. It also says 'Those who were left were slain' which would mean some managed to escape in time. So, did Lucius die, as it sounded like Amycus said, or did he in fact make it to the door in time? Don't tell me anything besides whether or not he lives. ^_^

The Malfoy's had gotten on the bad side of Voldemort because Lucius failed to get the prophecy and Draco failed to kill Dumbledore.

Because they failed at their assigned tasks the fell out of favor with the dark lord. In the scene you mentioned, the Carrows had a task, to catch Harry if he came to Ravenclaw tower. Alecto had touched her mark summoning the dark lord. Amycus knew this and tried to get in. Because Alecto didn't answer Amycus, he thought she might be failing at their task.

"If he comes, and we haven't got Potter-d'you want to go the way of the Malfoys?"

In other words do you want to experience the Dark Lord's displeasure.

The Malfoys haven't been killed - just demoted and humilated. Voldemort enjoys demeaning Lucius in front of his followers inside Malfoy's own home and forcing Draco to perform unforgivable curses.

I have GOT to re-read that book. There was always two different sides of my mind battling at that part. The more rational side was of course telling me that Harry couldn't die, there were too many pages left and JK Rowling loves this kid as much as I did, there's no way she could kill him off. Then the other side was reminding me that she had been so depressed after writing the last book, and maybe the reason was that she HAD killed Harry. All in all, considering the fact that these stories followed Harry "the chosen one" Potter through a series of six books, in each of which he faced off an evil force and in each of which he won, Rowling did an excellent job of keeping us on our toes. It would have been so, SO easy for everyone to shrug and say "we all know he'll live anyway. The kid never dies." But she didn't let that happen. That says a lot for the womans talent.

It doesn't imply they are dead. It implies something bad happened to them, which is true. Since they fell from Voldy's favor they were humiliated and stomped on and threatened and punished in various ways.

Lucius didn't die. He's still there at the end. Get off the computer and go finish the book.

i thought the malfoys died too but they show up at the end for their son so they obviously didn't. when amycus says that he may be referring to the malfoys being tortured by voldemort.

He lives. The death eaters get out of the doors but the goblins dont. Also he meant "same way" as just how they were treated.
