lol you just won points in my book! Can I add you???

I wonder if the pot got the reference?

Anyway..... your question is brilliant and is something that I think many of us struggle with on here. What's the definitive line? It's funny, I guess I usually can tell from someone's questions more than just their answers. Don't you believe there are questions that ask the people answering to show their stuff. Meaning....... the asker wants to put the focus on the people. Let them shine... let them share..... let them "do their thang!" And then there are questions were the asker is asking for self validation. I think these sometimes bother me and I move on to the next question. It's not that I don't think the asker is a fine person. I just hate to think that they feel the need to be told by the public. They should be able to feel it from their friends IF indeed they are a true friend themself.

Another line is when they answer. The attention seeker is oblivious to other answerers and sometimes even oblivious to the real question...... but finds a way to bring the focus on them. Now, I don't mean like in a humorous, laugh with me kind of way. That's cool.... and that's fun. I mean in a "give me some love and ego strokes" kind of way. Now the individual who shares may very well speak of themselves as well. But perhaps they do so in a "learn from my experiences" kind of way. They aren't asking you to praise them... or to think they are something special. In fact, they may even share a part of themselves they aren't particularly proud of. But in doing so, they are trying to reach a part of the asker in order to help them. THAT is the difference..... when it comes to talking about themselves.

One person cares about themselves.... the other cares about the person they are talking to.

(Loved this question... and very timely!!!)

The drama hound is a shallow person who needs people to make them feel good about themselves.

The person who is sharing openly about a lot of experiences is not trying to feed off of another person's reactions.

The line between them is that the 1st one annoys and offends people and you have a dread of #1 as, oh hell here they come again. The guy who is sharing truthfully is openly communicating about himself which is a human need for him and others. We all need to share or trade stories. It is the give and take in #2 that separates them from #1 who is just showing off. The exchange of stories is the key and that is how I would draw the line between the two.

Best of luck to you!!

Depends . . .

If they've had a couple of beers, they're just open and chatty.

If they've had five Jack Daniels and two Tequila Shooters, they've swerved W-A-A-Y over the line into the maudlin drama-hound catagory . . .

Good question.......

Usually, the attention seeking drama hound does not have the subtle class & tact when sharing his or her unusual life experiences..... yanno?

You can tell... .trust me....
