Waxing refers to an increase in size- the moon is getting larger because more sunlight is striking its surface making a larger part of the moon visible.
The opposite would be waning, or getting smaller. Where less sunlight strikes the moon so less of the moon is visible.
Remember, the moon is a rock, it does not glow or produce its own light. The moon can only be seen when the sun is shining on it.

Waxing means getting larger. Not that the moon is getting bigger, its just that more of the sunlit side of the moon is becoming visible to us as the moon moves in its orbit.
Once it reaches full moon, then it starts to "wane", meaning getting smaller (less of the sunlit side visible as the moon moves). When it is completely between us and the sun and we don't see of the sunlit side and its called new moon.
The moon keeps moving, and starts to wax again.

It means it is not full yet, but getting fuller each day. It starts as a thin crescent, waxes to full and wanes back to a crescent again.

Gaining in luster. Increasing in sunlit surface. As the Moon cycles from New Moon to Crescent to First Quarter to Gibbous to Full, it is said to be waxing.

As it transforms from Full to Gibbous to Last Quarter to Crescent to New, then it is said to be waning.
