I think the more relaxed you can be the more fluidly your conversation will "flow" because it will arise out of genuine interest in the topics on which you speak instead of from a need to please others or entertain them. If you're tempted to feel self-conscious, or fear being judged, remember you have the safety of anonymity on your side. This should "free" you to be completely honest (within the boundaries of ordinary common sense, of course...never compromise yourself by devulging things that can harm you to people until you have truly established their trustworthiness) with those with whom you speak. Lastly, have fun with it...talk about things you enjoy. You'll be surprised how many other people share some aspects of your point of view. Ask open ended questions of others and allow the conversation to flow where it will. Good luck.

I usually try to make a comment on what a person is wearing, or maybe their hairstyle, or even something about whatever action they are performing. Or if you are sharing whatever situation you are in, you could comment on that. I try to start small to get them to respond and maybe open up a little. Then you just need to work past your awkwardness and keep talking, either respond to what they said or make another comment. I find that people respond positively if you try to smile or laugh while talking (if appropriate given the situation) and try to share something personal about yourself (not your biggest secret ever!) For example, if I am waiting in line at the post office, and I see that the woman in line in front of me has a hairstyle that I really like, instead of just noting that in my head, I will say "I really love your hair. Where do you get it done?" (Questions are key, it gets people talking). She may respond by saying where, and coincidentally, it was a salon I had intended on trying. We talked about her stylist, my old one, and what I am looking for in a new cut. I end up getting her name, her stylist's name, and find out she also is a member of my gym. A new friend is made! I hope this helps.
