APGAR is a test that is given to newborns. It is not monitoring. Yes, they do monitor newborns in the nursery and they talk/teach new parents how to do the basics....

Your baby will be monitored closely for the first few hours after birth to make sure they are 'transitioning' well to extra-uterine life. After that, vital signs (heart rate, respirations, temperature) and an full physical assessment are done at least every 8 hours by an RN (sometimes every 4 hours if you tested positive for beta strep and did not receive adequate antibiotics during labor); the pediatrician will see the baby within 24 hours of delivery and then once a day until discharge home. If you have special concerns, discuss them with your baby's nurse...
Depending on the hospital, your baby may be taken to the nursery to be examined by the nursery nurse or may be cared for by the same nurse who is caring for you, in your room.
Either way, you and your baby will be well looked after by people trained in the care of post partum moms and newborns!

FYI: Although APGAR has been converted into both a mnemonic and an acronym, it was Dr. Virginia Apgar, an anesthesiologist, who devised the scoring system. She was memorialized many years ago with a postage stamp in her honor.

Some of them usually have a nursery for all the babies, with someone checking them constantly. Stop stressing, it will be fine.
