Xime666 is absolutely right! She gave you the exact times. From Lima you need to go to Cuzco first (by plane I presume as by bus is quite long and dangerous) then by train to Aguas Calientes (nearest town to Machu Picchu) and then by mini bus to Machu Picchu.

Hello, I want to Peru 3 years ago. I flew to Lima then took a flight to Cusco then I took a train and bus to Manchu Pichu. If you decide to go you will have n amazing experience if you keep an open mind. I have traveled all over and never had an problems. If you go do not show off. Bring a backpack and look like a backpacker. The fancy watch and jewelery should be left at home. Also, place cash in different pockets. You should have a pocket with limited cash to buy food etc. When you buy a chocolate bar you should not take out a wallet with 20 dollars, remember that 20 dollars to them is more than a week's wages. I was fine and only spoke English.

About 310 miles. Heres some info. on ways to get to Machu Pichu from Lima:
Nearly all tourists reach Machu Picchu by flying from Lima to the city of Cuzco (1 hour 15 minutes), staying overnight, then catching an early morning train to a village at the base of the ruins (several hours). They then transfer to a bus that zig-zags up a steep 2,000 foot high mountain slope to reach the Macchu Picchu site (30 minutes).
You can also hike from the Cuzco area to Macchu Picchu on a network of ancient paths collectively named the Inca (or Inka) Trail. The journey takes 2 to 10 days, depending on your speed and choice of paths.
Helicopter service between Cuzco and Machu Picchu is now once again available

A long way north from costal Lima. The flight from Lima to Cusco took a couple of hours and then when you get to Cusco you still must take a train to Aguas Caliente /Machu Piccu and then take about 2 hours on the bus to get to the actuall site. You can also hike the Inca Trail to get there but that will take you at least 3-4 days of some rugged hiking and outdoor living.
