are you sure it's a 2.6 and not a 2.8. if it's in a truck and it's a v6. it's probably a 2.8 and that is a Chevy engine. either way buy the book for that vehicle. it will explain everything. good luck

What you need to look for are the two reference marks and line them up and that's it. One mark is on the engine block and the other on the distributor shaft.

Once these marks are lined up and you tighten the bolt or nut that holds or locks the distributor shaft, then you are done. This is effectively mechanical TDC or top dead center on cylinder #1.

If you had to pull the distributor then the trick is making sure #1 cylinder is TDC on the compression stroke and then lining up the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder position on the distributor cap. It's all elementary from there. the computer adjusts the timing once the engine warms up and the switch/circuit closes.

If you had to do any major repairs like a timing belt then the engine should already be at top dead center when the new timing belt is installed and all you have to do is start the engine. There are also reference marks on the timing gears to make this is all a mechanically sound procedure.

Good Luck!
