Well I look at it based on seasons. Every one has bad times and good times.

Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar in '80's share the best Indian player for the number of world record they created.

Kapil for the best all-rounder India has ever produced.

In 90's Indian team had many talents.
- Although early 90' belonged to Vinod Kambli, who had the highest batting average in one-day and test then, Kambli, Lara and Tendulkar was always compared. Kambli's Era ended in 1996 world cup.
- From '96 WC Ajay Jadeja was a star for Indian Cricket. He and Robin Singh were considered the best finishers of the game in late '90s.
- Sourav Ganguly stared in late '90's.

- Over all Sachin R Tendulkar was the best player in '90's, was considered God of Cricket too... Indian team was always called One man Army. The opnonents wanted only the wicket of Sachin to be 95% sure to win the game.

2000-2007 WC is really a mix,
- Sourav Ganguly was at his worst, got fired.
- Yuvaraj became a new Indian star, a match winner.
- Irfan Pathan was new star, he was new best all-rounder, he was considered to be the next Wasim Akram (may be even Kapil Dev)
- Dhoni was a sudden fire on Indian pitches. He was a star in Indian pitches but could not shine elsewhere.
- Sachin, in & out of form. Injury prone. His usual great Century on every come back. But could'nt carry on his form. He changed his gear to his game. It became slow sometimes very slow. (an worst experiment of Greg Chappell, a failure)
- Gangully had a fiery come back with an average of 50's for his couple of comeback matches. Was too bad in World Cup.
He was criticised to be just playing for a place in the side and not for the team.
- Rahul Dravid, The Wall. was very very consistent averaging almost 50's in this season. Only most reliable player, Captian.

- Rahul Dravid the best Indian player of season 2000-2007

After World Cup its a mix too.
- Change in Coach had done some difference.
- Sachin playing his natural game. (a good sign)
- Gangully playing his natural game. (a good sign)
- Zaheer Khan with good performance with the ball.

Summary:
Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar in '80 's
Sachin R Tendulkar in '90's
Rahul Dravid in 2000-2007

Rahul Dravid, and this is coming from a pakistani supporter. It is impossible to describe the impact he has on the team, and most bowlers would feel a greater relief in getting him out rather than Tendulkar, because when dravid gets in, he stays in. No bowler can say they have made Dravid look ordinary, (Tendulkar has Glenn Mcgrath to do that for him before you ask). He makes panicky situations relax with ease and can hold the strain of batting in tense situations for long periods of time. He is India's "Get out of Jail card", when needed.
