THE MAIN REASON IS SCALES PRESENT ON THE SURFACE OF WOOL FIBERS. When AGETATED in the WASHING m/c with water they attach with each other and shrink, same thing takes place during tumble dye(temperature plays the role).

when you rolling or pressing wool by the application of moisture or heat, motions and soap, that's causing the constituent fibers to mat together,to create a smooth surface
and shrinking .

Funny, not.
It shrinks because it is a loosely woven fiber, which tightens when it is exposed to water and then dried.
