An old friend and I are interested in touring Iwo Jima and possibly Sagion (HCMC). There appears to be a pretty good airfield on the island.

Saigon is no sweat. I am currently living in Vietnam and the feeling towards americans here is great. I have been here a year and have yet to find a negative attitude about the American war. If I can help in any way please email me and I can give you more info about Vietnam.

Joriental is right, you cannot usually go to Iwo Jima (except for that anniversary tour mentioned above) and Iwo Jima has changed its name after that movie came out, angered some people, and is now called again Iwo Tou!

Sorry Joriental, I should have given more detailed info like you!

There are no tours and you can NOT go there.
Iwo-jima is under the controle of JMSDF (Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force), and even Japanese citizen can't land on the island freely.

Selena. Your info misleads little bit. Japan hasn't changed the name, but UNIFIED (consolidated) 2 names in 1.
Japan army (today's JSDF) and ppl who had ever lived there before WW2 were calling the island as Iwo-tou ("tou/to" means island), but Japan navy (JMSDF) and charts were Iwo-jima ("jima" is also island). The movie took the latter name.
Ppl implored the government to unify the name because the world may mistake the name of the island by the influence of the movie.
Japan haven't changed the name. Ppl wanted the real name of the island. That's all.

The world news doesn't report this in English.
It is just like Nippon (western Japanese) and Nihon (eastern Japanese pronunciation).
