Cheque is British, check is American. Check has two meanings: a bank document for paying someone or company a certain amount of money; to see, feel, hear, etc, to ensure something is alright, in order.
Cheque is the bank document, too.

"CHEQUE" is simply "CHECK." What you write to pay someone with, or a traveller's check, the bill you receive at a restaurant, etc.
Cheque is the more formal spelling used in America taken from English and the romance languages. It's used most often by banks and credit card companies (maybe to make their traveller's checks sound more upscale).
