Ok, I understand about like LOG5,25=2 b/c 2 is the exponent thats simple, but what I want to know is, in my textbook for Algebra, it says that LOG24=1.3802112 and this is base-10 common logarithm it says (which is based10) So, why doesnt it show me how to do it manually??? I mean, I just dont understand why it says do it by calculator by hitting the LOG button???????? Is this type of thing only doable by super-geniuses and way beyond me?????

the logarithm is just the inverse of exponential. If you tink about it that way it is pretty simple. And unless you are a savant I don't think you can find the log of 24 or most other numbers without a calculator

Numerically evaluating logarithms is not something that can simply be done by hand with a pencil and paper. You can get decent estimates pretty quickly, but usually not exact answers. It's not like long division or factorization. The calculator is really the most efficient way. Before calculators, everyone used logarithm tables. Thousands of pages of values. No fun, right?

Definition
The log of a number to a given base is the power to which the base must be raised to give the number.
Example 1
log10 1000 = 3
10 ³ = 1000

Example 2
log2 16 = 4
2^4 = 16

In your examples:-
log5 25 = 2
ie 5² = 25

log10 24 = x
10^x = 24
x = 1.3802
Answer obtained by pressing
24
log

Check 10^(1.3802) = 24

You can do this----don`t become annoyed!!!

You cannot easily get the number x, such that 10^x = 24, because 24 is not a power of 10.

This is the reason calculators are needed to find the value.
