For me, it was the idea of losing something/one you loved dearly and would do anything to get them back, and then seeing the monster that this person/pet has become due to your own selfish desire to have them with you again. More of a human nature fear, wanting something so baddly that it doesn't matter what the consequences are, even losing the very essence of what you wanted in the first place. Really more sad than actually scary, though.

I was young when I read it and I think the whole premise was scary. The thought of a burial ground where you buried your pet and it came back -- just "not quite right". My imagination took hold of that one and I would have to leave the lights on when I went to bed. I agree that the Shining was scary. I thought the book was alot scarier than the movie but Jack Nicholson was good in the movie.....

I don't think it really scared me... the whole Pascow thing.. (whatever his name was.. it's been many years).. that was kind of out there.
the only reason it even made me nervous was because I was just so young.. I read this when I was 8.. (I started reading when I was 3, so I started reading more adult fiction early and my mother was thrilled) I think the Shining scared me more than pet Semetary

A couple of years ago I used to read Stephen King during vacations. Not anymore, he kind of began to repeat himself.
Anyway, I agree with you. I didn't find Pet Cemetery scary, especially in comparison with "The Shining" and "It". From my own point of view "The Shining" is the scariest of all his books. JMO

I read a couple years back and i didn't find it scary really. I think the most disturbing part is when page i think that's his name comes back and attacks the old man giggling the whole time like he's playing..but other than that it was a decent read

I love Stephen King's works. I've read most of them, and haven't found any of them "scary" in the traditional sense. What I like about his novels is that sense of "what if..." you know, like certain things could happen. I think he's categorized as a psychological thriller writer, and I agree with that definition. He plays with people's minds and I suppose that, in itself, can be scary.

The creepiest part was people coming back from the dead and they weren't really themselves just a creepy version of themselves.
The book didn't really frighten me, the only one I read where I had to sleep with the lights on was The Shining.

I've read it many years ago, For me, the SCARIEST part of the book is the thought of, to what lenghts one would go to, if they were to loose a child.
That is what classified it a a horror book to me
I love horror - so it was a great read!!
