this is when they "sunbathe".iguanas are ecotherms, they need light and heat to warm themselves up. if you have an iguana id recomend you check this site out and look up the care sheet for iguanas, make sure you have everything you need for them! wnyherp.org
these are a quick cheat list of what you need:
a HUGE tank, cage, whatever. i mean huge like 8x8feet!
ubv emitter
150watt uva light--on for 12 hours a day
125 watt infared light for night
vines, branches, leaves...plenty of things to climb vertically on.
big water bowl to swim in
a mister..electronice ones are much easier to maintain the humidity it needs to be 75%.
a humidity gauge
2 thermometers--- one side of the tank should be 95f and the other side 85f
the substrate should be something the iguana can not injest... like repti-mats or repti-lawn or repti-moss
and the diet should be strictly vegetarian. they do not need insect or animal protein,,,i see too many people feed insects to these guys and they develop horrible bone and muscle issues.... avoid iceburg, romaine, and butter lettuce. try kale, turnip greens, collard greens.... only feed fruit as a treat once a month...but not alot check out wnyherp.org for the full info
PS avoid hot rocks at alllll costs. these are extremly unreliable and are known to cause severe burns and even death!!

Basking is when a cold blooded animal warms up by sitting in the sun, laying on a warm rock, or lying under a heat lamp. Remember, these animals can't keep their temperature the same on their own, they have to use the environment. Every reptile environment should have a warm side and a cool side. The animal should regulate its own temperature by moving between the sides. If you notice your reptile spending a lot of time on one side, perhaps the temperature on the other side is too extreme.

basking means that your pet is regulating their body temperature. This aids in digestion and growth. if they get cold, they would "bask" at a hotspot on their enclosure or somewhere that is warm and usually with direct exposure to sunlight.

Also, they need to raise their body temperatures to a certain level in order to digest food properly. An under-heated reptile will not eat and digest nutrients, and will become ill rather quickly. Lizards like Iggys need quite high temps....as well as UVB, proper diet and vitamins, and a water pool to soak in.
