There are few lizards which can be kept in captivity and are not insectivores. Iguanas can be herbivores though their diets must be carefully monitored to ensure proper vitamins and they tend to get enormous. Bearded lizards can have a diet of about 70% veggies and fruits, but need some live prey, and the same goes with turtles. Why not consider a snake? While it is true they are carnivores, most pet stores sell pre-killed mice which are easy to feed and run no risk of getting loose and destroying the house. Just remember that any reptile needs to have a large enough enclosure that is kept clean (so as to reduce the risk of salmonella) and has a secure, locking lid. Buy the enclosure before the animal.

Iguanas do not eat bugs hey are vegetarians but they can get over 6 feet long , need very large cages and can get aggressive as they get older .
A Uromastyx Mali or Uromasyx Egyptian only eats veggies . Mali's only get 12 inches long but Egyptians can get 5 feet or more .But they are not for beginners , they need very large cages even for baby Uro's , specific heating and lighting and can be expensive . There is a lot of bad information out there about Uro's and out of date books so if you want to research them before you decide to get one .Go to http://www.repticzone.com There are some experts there that give good info . I own a Uromastyx Mali and can help you out more if your interested . Just e mail me if you need any thing . I am Skulkeeper on the reticzone forum .

Iguanas are true herbivores--they do not and should not eat insects or other animal proteins. A big fresh salad with vitamins every day is what they need! They grow quite large (up to 6 feet) and need very large enclosures, as well as heat lamps, UVB lamps, and a small pool. See:

and

for complete care info.

They eat bugs and they also carry salmonella. There is just no reason why a non-trashy person needs a giant lizard in the house. My husband's co-worker has 2 in the office because the man's wife banished them from their house. Now my husband has to put up with mealworms crawling around on the floor every day. They go under doors and get into everyone else's office, then die on the floor.
