Maybe they believe he portends some menace to their owner.
Maybe it's because he is moving.

My dog barks anytime a leaf blows across the yard.

Its not just the mailman my friend reads the electricity meter he has attacked at least 4 times one time he had to go hospital now he carries a HUGE and gets in before they do.

Instincts. They bark, snarl, etc and lo and behold, the mailman leaves, every time, nearly every day. Really, when it comes down to it, most everything a dog does is instinct-based. People are making psychotic dogs by treating them as little furry humans.

Actually it's a stereotype that some dogs hate the mailman. If owners train their dogs, they won't mind the person. But most of the time, the case happens to be that the dog is trying to protect it's territory from strangers.

For the majority of dogs the answer is: simple conditioning.

Your dog's negative response was shaped gradually. The mail carrier "invades" your yard predictably, almost every day of the week. He walks brazenly into your yard, right onto your porch, and rattles your mailbox. Even though your dog barks and "scares" him away, he has the audacity to come back, day after day, seemingly to taunt your dog just one more time. The dog perceives it as an intrusion on its territory.

They are a stranger walking into their yard carrying this big bag. After a while most dogs get used to them but still like to bark at them. Mine raises all kinds of noise when he sees mine but if I let him outside, he runs to him wagging his tail. Some dogs just don't like them coming into their territory.
