I live in LA where tanned, light-haired and light-eyed, Abercrombie sporting cheerleader-type girls are a dime a dozen. I know that most guys fancy them, but I just don’t understand why. A lot of them aren’t even that pretty aside from the orange skin and bleach. But more importantly, THEY ALL LOOK ALIKE!! Whatever happened to looking original? And if you don’t fit that mold, why does that automatically deem you unworthy of attention from the opposite sex? That seems to be the case, or at least in LA…and that sort of sucks for girls like me who have dark hair and light skin. I guess having tattoos makes girls like me even less desirable. So my question is this: is it true that looking like a concoction out of a teen magazine will land you more dates? I appreciate all answers, especially those from the guys.

Standards of beauty vary with historical period and culture. To some degree, America seems to be smitten with the "cookie cutter girl" look that you describe. I've even read a book about the popularity of plastic surgery in which one surgeon claims that we're genetically wired to like that kind of look. Me, I don't buy it. I think that you could do very well by being different--remember, people like variety. As a guy, I have to say that the tanned, blonde, California model look doesn't do much for me. I know I'm not alone.

I totally agree with you!! Just the other day my mom and i were watching these ugly Blondie's walk by, it's only the blond hair that people look at i swear. Because who likes looking like a blonde orange, i mean really? You can always tell when someone isn't naturally tan, and it looks stupid. I tanned for my wedding, and that is what you see in my avatar, but i have light skin now and i don't intend to change myself to fit that ridiculous standard!

CS identifies herself as a cookie-cutter girl, and look how obnoxious she was to you. (Jealous? Please. Get over yourself CS.) Do you REALLY want a guy who would find CS's personality acceptable because of her fake tan?

Perhaps you WILL land less dates without the blonde hair, but my guess is that the ones you do land will be quality guys. Don't change. And don't worry.

I'm not a guy, but I am totally into girls! I personally don't like "cookie cutter" girls. They're just not healthy looking. They look like the plastic they're made out of. I prefer women who look like REAL people, who let their personality control their life and not their looks.

The IT look varies from year to year. Some years it seems it is blond and tanned. Other years black hair and pale skin. Still other years it has been sultry browns.

where you live? i would have to say yes. Actually, in most places i think this is true. but honestly, do you think you want to go on the dates with guys who just look for the coconut oil Malibu Barbie look?

i see a lot of tourists here in hawaii, some of them look like what u describe. i agree with you that they aren't all that pretty, but still have some good assets.

my guy friends in hawaii don't really go for those kinds of girls.

i think that tv shows and stuff make them think they have to look like that.

i also think that its their confidence in themselves that makes them more appealing and stuff. just thinking they look good, makes them feel good.

i totally agree. and guys say they like when girls look "natural" but they go for the girls that are as fake as can be: too too much makeup, fake hair, fake body parts, and fake personalities. what the f***?? guys can you help me to understand this???

i think it will...but i also think it really matters on the guy. if they only care for looks, then what a bunch of losers. they don't know what they're missing...others with great personality.
