You can talk to folks you know who have read the book.
Or you can count on favorite authors, though sometimes even the best writers turn out turkeys.
I don't put a lot of stock in reviews. On many ocassions books that the critics gave rave reviews stunk to high heaven. Other books that critics panned hell out of turned out to be great reads.
I guess it comes down to being a "You pays your money and you takes your chances" deal.

actually having other people's opinions on the book doesn't make it good for you though, because people have different tastes than you do. I read the back of the book and if the plot or whatever is on the back is something I find intriguing, I read it. However most of the time the book is good, sometimes it may be a bit boring.

I read everything by my favorite authors as soon as it comes out. If I am taking a vacation and want reading material I will bring a few books that I have heard are good.I find authors to be pretty consistent, if they are really good I will like almost everything they write.

I always read the very last line of the book. If it's good enough to intrigue me I read it. I haven't been wrong yet.

Interesting question. I guess it would have to depend on whether you liked the author or not. If you could tell by just looking at the cover, then you probably could apply the same principles to relationships and cut the divorce rate in half.

check the synopsis. if it interests you, read the first page. if you like it, it's most likely going to be a good book.
