Depends who the guest is.

If it's my best friend, he volunteers washing the dishes and we're comfortable with it.

Others, since they are guests, they deserve to be treated as such. I don't expect them to offer help, i don't ask them to help them either.

I usually try to clean as I go so there's not alot of cleaning left. I just throw the dishes into the dishwasher and wash off the table and it's done. Most of my guests try and chip in anyways and I usually tell them to go visit with my husband and I am done within 5 minutes. I know alot of people say they'll clean it up later and they go and visit with their guests, but dishes is one thing that I'm a little obsessive over. I'd rather get it done and then visit. Everyone I ever have over for dinner knows me well enought o accept that about me.

Oh absolutely not!

That's a big hospitality no-no. Having friends over for dinner is a gift of pleasure that you give to your guest. Letting them help with the clean-up kind of ruins that gift. A good host NEVER makes or lets their guest help with clean-up.

Now...I may well ***** my head off later while I'm doing the dishes, but that's ok. I was still a gracious host when it counted!

No, cos they came over to relax and have fun. If I'm a guest to someone else's house, I'd offer to help, but I'd be amazed if they said yes. I like to try and make it so that the whole evening isn't washing up. Which is why my dinner parties are take-aways infront of a FrontRow film? LOL!

It depends on if your guests are family or close friends. If you are close to your guest then yes but if not try to wait until they leave so they do not feel inclined to offer help.

If they insist I will let them bring the dishes to the sink or do something small. I usually say, I will do this later, lets go in the living room and have coffee or dessert and talk...
