That's pretty much how I see it too..I haven't heard a single thing they promote that isn't self serving at the core.

I am wondering if you understand "liberalism" at all or whether you've researched the political spectrum? The ideas advocated by liberalism simply contain this main premise: we, the community or nation, are bound to each other by a civil contract that protects the privacy and property rights of the individual. However, over time it has become equated with over bloated government pork and big spending on welfare. American or U.S. liberalism's intent was to provide social uplift for the poor and needy. It sought, and still does, to protect the weak and the minority from the over powering wealth and corruption of corporations in an unfair market system.
Conservatism, at one time, held similar views but emphasized the right of the individual only so far as it served the state. Ideas such as strong love of country, civic duty, and civil service originated under classicalism which is the foundation of conservatism. The above ideas are not bad in and of themselves but when they are used to usurp the right of the individual to express themselves and achieve happiness they become oppressive.
Democrats or the party, like all political parties, have factions
that operate along the entire political spectrum. They have conservatives, centrists, and liberals. Each of these have various levels like ultra- and far- that indicate how extreme some views are held by its members.
So, when you look in the mirror as a Democrat you may see someone that falls along a part of the political spectrum or within a particular faction. Hopefully, you see someone that cares about the people and their rights.

I can look at myself....if you have a problem with the way I think...too bad because you disagreeing with me will not change my mind. In my opinion you have described conservatism...the independent way of life. They believe in no welfare for the poor, no universal health care even though millions can not afford it the list goes on. What about those poor people who are living on the streets....those children without health care? Oh well I guess it is okay to just let them suffer because you want the independent way of life...not selfish at all. Especially when you call the people who want to provide them with services selfish...give me a break. I want what is for the good of the society and I am not selfish.....and if you think so then prove it.

Funny. As a liberal I see conservatives as completely selfish and focused on not having to pay for anything for anybody but themselves. Greed is good, more greed means more growth, and forget the collateral damages.

I don't have any qualms about looking at myself in the mirror. I go to work as a nurse, I have a wonderful family, I pay my taxes, go to church, volunteer my time and participate in my community. I don't think that makes me selfish at all --- get over yourself. Maybe you should look in the mirror and not kid yourself about being a "compassionate conservative"

I smile at the thought of the conservative taxpayers who paid for the mirror - it makes me look younger and slimmer than I really am.
