Generally, there are state laws that DO allow employers to deduct money from employee's for things that are considered a "loss" to the business, i.e. cash, breakage or damage to product, etc.
However, most states also require the employee to have SIGNED a payroll deduction authorization form (or promissory note), and often times, for the specific item. (i.e. signing a blank waiver authorizing any and all deductions from your paycheck vs. signing a specific form stating that X,Y, Z deductions are authorized by you).
Laws vary from state to state, but if it's against the law, it will be a state law. There is no federal law that mandates deductions from an employee's check outside of illegal deductions for "time worked" issues.
Most states have a state department of labor website. I would go there first as the Federal Department of Labor won't really be any help.

If your lawyer cannot help you, maybe you need another lawyer. Or, a different job. Laws vary from state to state, but you should be able to find your state wage laws online.

Call the labor board and that will take care of it for you...that is a common complaint and it's against the law.
Meanwhile, be looking for another job.

Try pressing charges. You won't get any money, but a criminal will go to jail. You should have a good reason or at the least fire the individual.

Yes, it is. The fact that the lawyer said he couldn't help didn't tell you that???
