I keep trying to hold down the play/pause button but its not turning off. This has happened before and it wouldnt turn off until it ran out of battery. What is wrong?

Happens sometimes. Fix it following these steps.
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

make sure that the hold button is in the correct position. try holding down both the center button and the play/pause button. if that doesnt work, take it to the apple store. they will either fix it for you or give you a new one for free.

Probably locked up. Flip the hold switch then hold down the menu and center button at the same time.

Mash the center button and the top button and hold until the apple logo shows. Keep holding until it goes off and your ipod goes off.

maybe you tried this already but hold the middle button and menu at the same time to reset it. you may have to hold it for a long time, like a minute, or plug it into a computer

Are you sure that you hold down that button for 5 seconds?

Take it out let the battery drain completely then charge it back up, this should solve problem, overcharging can fry the battery, same thing happened to my Ipod before it went kaput, if it does go they do sell batteries for it, like $12-25 dollars. Good luck

Mine did the same thing a little while ago, I brought it into the Apple store... he said next time, just plug it into your computer, it will tell you what's wrong with it...
I needed to download the new version of iTunes... and if i'm not mistaken, I believe there is a fairly new version out right now...

Either it froze, or there's something wrong with it.
Just try pressing the center button and menu at the same time.

you mite have to re-sync it. or if the hold button is on then you'll have to unswitch that
