Assuming you drained it and didn't measure the amount of fluid you removed?

Best plan of attack would be to add three quarts and then check the dipstick with the engine NOT running. If the fluid is not at the full mark but in the operating range then start the car and let it run a minute and then check the dipstick while the engine is running. If it is low or barely touching the dipstick then you can add a fourth quart and recheck it with the engine running.

Most smaller cars will only lose 3-4 quarts when you drop the pan and pull the filter. Even if you measure the fluid in a drain pan that is marked in quarts it is always advisable to add one less quart than you suspect you removed and then top it off after checking the dipstick and running the engine.

You always check the fluid level with the engine running as this puts the fluid in circulation and gives you the proper full reading.

Believe it or not there are national repair shops who employ people who don't know this and they assume the transmission is full when they dump in fluid and check the dipstcik when the motor is not running. My brother-in-law had his tranny serviced at one of these tire shop places and it was three quarts low and kept skipping and slipping until I added three quarts to it.

They also couldn't get the plugs out of the cylinder head but charged him for a tune-up anyway.

Good Luck!
