I'm a teacher, and I have students with cell phones.
As long as I never see them during class/school time, I could care less. I have NEVER had a student's cell phone go off during class time. It appears that my threats (confiscated, parent has to retrieve it, AND I answer it impersonating a character of my choice) have worked.
Many students have issues with pick-ups, after school activities, custody confusion, delays in sports games, etc. The mere act of "having" a cell phone should not be a problem.
Now, that said, cell phones and iPods can be used to cheat, so obviously they need to be off, out of sight, and away from THIS teacher's prying eyes. :-)

Cell phones should not be allowed in Middle and Elementary schools. They should be off during class in High school.

There is no need for a student to have a phone at school. The parents need to have the schools number in "their" cell phone and there current cell on log at the school. Students having these phones only cause issues with theft and possible misuse.

ok well i am a teacher.....so i think that cell phones in a school are a huge distraction.....i think that the students need to be focusing on their academics not texting their friends or playing games on their cell or whatever... i am a new teacher i am only 23 yrs old but i think that cell phones are a great thing but they should not be allowed in the academic area...

My husband teaches high school, and cell phones are forbidden on campus. The kids are supposed to leave them in their cars. If teachers see them, they're supposed to turn them in to the principal's office and their parents have to come and pick the phones up.
My husband isn't that strict; if he sees one he tells the kid to put it away and not let him see it again. There's one teacher though (that nobody likes, including my husband) who will actually LOOK THROUGH the kid's bag if she suspects they have a phone! I think that's going a bit far.
My husband doesn't mind if kids carry phones, as long as they're turned off. There's no reason to have a phone on during the school day.
As an aside, one kid got their phone confiscated and they received a text message... the principal saw that the text was from another kid in school and went right to their classroom and busted them too! LOL

i normally wouldnt have brought my cell to class with me but the day my daughter got sick for some reason i brought my phone with me to class and got a call saying she went into the hospital so it was a good thing I brought it, but anyways, I dont think we should have to keep them in our lockers but we should be allowed to bring them to class with us as long as they are off and have the teacher check to make sure the phone is off, that way you cant be distracted, but normally i dont see why yoou would even have your phone with you because you shouldnt be getting any calls, i only did because I had my daughter and every now and then id get texts to let me know she was doing ok ( i had my daughter at 15 )

Sometimes it's necessary to have a cell phone on you. For example, if there's a crisis going on at home or something... they would need to be contacted.
I really don't like seeing people playing with their cell phones during class, because I know they're not benifiting much from what is actually supossed to be going on...
If they have them, & keep them on viberate or something, & not bring them out during class, it's okay with me! =]

I think they are in apropriate in school of any kind. There is nothing that someone needs to tell a child that can't wait until after school. We survived without them until 20 years ago!
