Who questions first? what does the courtroom look like?

The Prosecution presents the witnesses first through a direct examination and the Defense conducts the cross examination. The Prosecution then makes the re-direct exmination and the Defense is given the re-cross examination. The judge controls the trial and can ask clarificatory questions. Afterwhich, the witness is allowed to go.

The Plaintiff speaks first then the Defendant speaks.

You can go to your local courthouse and observe trials unless they are closed trials. If you have a law school in your area check to see if they have a visitation tour for high-school students.

The Plaintiff or the Prosecutor present their cases first, when they are done, the Defendant presents theirs.

With each individual witness, whichever side called them questions first.
