This has happened to me twice. The laptops are old Dell's. The only things of value on the drives are photos that I didn't have backed up. (The only baby pictures of my cats...)

If the hard drive is not damaged, I would recommend you take out the hard drive and place it in an external enclosure. Basically, you convert your laptop's hard drive into an external hard drive. Now, you can connect this external hard drive to any other computer and access the data stored on it. External enclosures are very inexpensive; you should be available to find a decent one for $35. The external enclosure should also come with instructions on how to install it. It is very simple.

The quickest way...If you have another PC; get an IDE ribbon cable with master and slave connections. Set the old laptop hard drive to cable select or slave (the jumpers should be marked or get it off the website). Leave the hard drive that's in the pc now. (I'm assuming you already have an operating system on it...LOL) and then fire it up. The old laptop drive will be added into your list of drives and as long as it can be read, you can copy everything over to the first drive (C:|\).
Most of the Dells have standard IDE so you're all good there. (Other companies made proprietary interfaces that make it more difficult.)
Good Luck!
