Dustin Penner is not worth anywhere close to 4.25 million dollars a year.

To me, the only thing this guy has going for him is his size, (I think 6-foot-4, 245 but don't quote me on that) and the fact that 5 of his 29 goals were game-winners.

This guy only has two years of experience in the AHL, only played one year in the NCAA ... and other than that ... he has his 82-game season with Anaheim under his belt.

That's not a lot of experience for a guy who could be making 4.25 million on a team that is becoming more and more like the NEW YORK ISLANDERS of the WESTERN CONFERENCE. Kevin Lowe is a fruit cake. 'Nuff said.

If I were Brian Burke, I would make more nasty comments about him to the public, let Lowe have Penner, and laugh in his face when Penner ends up back in the AHL due to his "lack of passion and intensity."

If I went from making 425,000 to 4.25 million - I would be laughing so hard I'd forget what my main job was, too.

What a JOKEEE.

Let him go, Burke! He's not worth it. Unlike Edmonton, the Ducks have a great core of young players to develop. They are better off taking the draft picks and working towards the future.

It's a joke that Penner could be making just one million bucks less than RYAN SMYTH ... the most heralded free agent of the summer.

Lowe is ruining the NHL.

God, no. Lowe is flailing as a GM and is single handedly throwin' the NHL's salary scale out of whack.

The Ducks should 1) kick themselves for not getting Penner's deal done sooner and 2) walk from the kid in exchange for the 3 draft picks. Penner's a nice enough player, but I think a good portionof his success is due to the Ducks system as well as his linemates.

The Devils better get Parise done if they before this repeating scenario plays out at their expense next time.

For the Oilers? Absolutely. For any other team? Not a chance. The Oilers are in a pretty unique spot, they have all sorts of cap room available, but nobody wants to go to Edmonton. So they have to overpay for every free agent (just look at Souray) and try innovative things to try and get other guys. I actually like the move, and I sure would have liked to be a fly on the wall when Brian Burke heard about it

A 45 point player getting paid 4.5M$/year is absurd.

For the money they offered Penner, they could've given that to Mike Cammalleri and gotten an 80 point player.

Granted, Cammalleri doesn't have the same size Penner has, but he is a better offensive player.

For every 10 points you score in the NHL, you get a million bucks. Penner better thank his agent for this deal.

I guess I'll have to agree with the majority here, even though I believe Penner has potential. 4.5 million for 45 points is just too much.

No, not quite. He's a very skilled player who's definately on his way up. I would think he's worth high 2 millions, but the kind of money some players have gotten this offseason, maybe he is worth it. He is a proven player who can get 50 points in a season and play on the 2nd line well who you could try on the 1st line. The oilers are desperate but I don't if he's worth that much.

It depends if you mean in an absolute sense or in a relative sense. I don't think that any human being deserves that much money when there is so much poverty in the world...

...But in relation to what other players are making, yes. As an Oilers fan I would LOVE to see him in the blue and copper. He would be a great addition to the team.

Nope. I think they accidentally added a zero to the contract.

He does have potential, but they're forcing him to be worth what they're giving him and that never works out well. By this time next year they'll be trying to unload him just to dump the huge salary.

I hope I'm wrong though, he's a good player, but not worth that much.

Sabres gave derek Roy the same kind of dough today. You think Roy is worth that kind of money?
I'm laughing at this because I'm sure Lowe is just doing his best to use the rules to screw over the competition.
Right now we call him a fool but the fool may have the last laugh.

The Oilers are in need of talent, so for them, I guess, but I wouldn't pay him a nickle over $2.5 mil/year.

The Ducks would be foolish to match this offer.
