There are a lot of good answers here--but only one of you has listed any sources.

If I wanted to explain the difference to someone who didn't live in the USA where could I point them to learn more about the differences?

John Doe 1st, I appreciate your kind answer to me. :-) However, if you don’t have the time or patience to answer the question, dear, you shouldn’t.

I wish you would take the time though, because I still really need extra sources. I’m trying to convince some people of the difference.

What I thought was extremely interesting is that John Doe 1st (and several others here) automatically assumed everyone equates the two? I don’t have time to watch much TV or listen to the radio. (My friends know this and actually call and tell me to turn on the news if something of importance happens.) I try to get my sources from other places and make up my mind from them.

When you won’t site sources, and follow a logical and *comprehensive* thought process tying in differences between the two (differentiating what others point at as being the same in each ideology), it sure doesn’t help to win people to your point of view does it?

open4one has the actual description of how it really is.
Those other two descriptions are the dictionary, along will with some very lovely, liberal propaganda. True Communism is only a
theory. Any country that has ever tried it has ended up being nothing more than brutal military dictatorship.Anybody who disagrees,
please name this country. As far as liberals go,their actions
say it loud and clear. Not much difference at all

the founding fathers you say, think again, because you are wrong
your answer is like a paint brush in that it covers a lot of area but hides the history of what is underneath, and also it looks so much better.
the truth is GW had to stop his pundits form turning america into a police state , and even george was some what of a militant if my memory has not failed me.
so really there is no argument on this forum at all as we clearly are up to our eye balls in a police state , oh you sneaky little nazis , or mafios, or japs or commies or what ever you call you selves now.

Yes with classic liberals. But with modern liberals, there is infact very little differences.

The only differences is Communists actually admitting it while liberals try and hid it by calling everyone a racist

Liberalism is the concept of a big government to divide up the goods and services of a society according to the big government's current concept of what's "fair". This usually means the richest of society maintaining control by promising that they will tax the richest in society for the benefit of the masses.

Communism is the same thing, but comes after the big government no longer feels the need to disguise the force that is required to actually make the system work. They do generally still require people pretend that it isn't there, but they no longer hide it. They also stop promising to tax the rich because they deny that there are any rich.

Fascism is pretty much the same as Communism, but they historically tend to have snazzier uniforms and freely admit that some people are rich.

Liberty is when people can live their lives without thinking about the government.

There's a difference of day and night in these two political theories. Communism accumulates and consolidates power in very few hands while liberalism advocates openess and ensures the rights and welfare of ALL citizens, not just the rich, affluent and powerful.

Here are a bit more detailed definitions:

Communism is an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, stateless social organization based on common ownership of the means of production. It can be considered a branch of the broader socialist movement.

Liberalism has been best described below:

"If by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."
(President John F. Kennedy)

No difference whatsoever. They both want a perfect, idealist society where everyone (the proletariat) is equal and in control. The only problem is that is not possible!

is there difference between horses and cows, they both have 4 legs right? so they are the same, or not. the founding fathers of the USA were Liberals but they were not communists. Communism is an economic system, Liberalism is the social philosophy that is often a force applied to types of governance. or a philosophy of government. Liberal is usually a term used by a group to portray differences often in a negative way, mostly in rhetorical ranting and raving.

From the dictionary: liberalism: c : a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties

Communism:a theory advocating elimination of private property b : a system in which goods are owned in common and are available to all as needed

Seems pretty differant to me.
