Im looking for an idea to vamp up cheap flatware for a dinner party Im having. I was wondering if I could purchase cheap flatware and paint it. So far, I can't seem to find a non-toxic paint. I did find one that is considered non-toxic, but it's not approved by the FDA as food safe. If I use that, I'd probably only paint the handles, but I would also like to pain the spoon bowls and fork tines as well. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have never heard of a food safe paint for flatware. I have, though, seen some very nice looking flatware, that didn't hold up to time, but certainly would make it one dinner, that was around $40. One way to make everything look great, is use the cheaper flatware, then make the other decorations sing. Your guests will spend so much time ogling the accessories they won't have time to notice the price of your flatware. A hint for picking the new flatware. Go simple and elegant. The more detailed ("fancier") it is, the cheaper it looks.

One of the comments before mine suggested you put gold leaf and beads on your old flatware. That would be a great way to add pizazz to your table.

Paint would be too toxic. For wooden handles you could try a wood burner to put designs on them, or for metal you could try an engraver. With the engraver you could put designs on the soup bowls and fork tines without trying to kill someone (as long as you thoroughly clean them afterwards). The only time I would paint flatware for anything is if you made a windchime out of them.

If the cheap flatware is new it should be good-looking enough to not need paint. Nothing you apint with would be acceptable.

Try setting the table with candles and leaving off the bright lights. Then no one will see the details of flatware.

I would tend to think that any type of pant on the spoon bowls or folk tines would be unsafe,, but it does sound like it would be nice.. Using acrylic paint with the pattern matching your dinner ware would work.. You can also get some gold or copper foil from the craft store, then maybe using some jewelry wire and glass beading you could wrap that around the handle after doing the foiling.. I think that would look kinda cool...

Get some bonami and start scrubbing the flatware that you have.
