How can I make a small scarf like this one http://www.lulette.com/cupcake.html ?
It's not a granny-knit type of scarf, and I'd like it to have the same texture and even the writting in the scarf.
(I'd love to be able to purchase it, but it's muuuch too expensive, sorry!)

Knit or sew a plain scarf, then print out the letters from the computer. Use a light box or sunlight through a window to shine the letters through the scarf so you can paint them on with fabric paint or dye.

It is possible to knit such a scarf by hand, but you need to very experienced knitter to do it.
The same if you knit it on a simple knitting machine.
To get the results in the photo you need a knitting machine that is designed for work like this, with computer programs to enter the text / pictures.
And they are expensive, that is why they charge as much as they do.

If you are an experienced knitter (either hand or machine) try to work double string, with just one showing on the good side, both on the other side.
One way would be a 1 rib, with the knit stitches on the one side all in the colour the pattern asks for, the purl stitches in between the other colour or alternating between colours.
Use the smallest needles and yarn you can handle, and make a test piece to work out the size so you can make a colour pattern.

Willeke is correct.
But-
This is possible to do if you are very determined.
Planning is the key to letters in your knit work.
Graphing or sketching your words on graph paper will be essentially worth every minute. Using a smaller yarn with a larger number of stitches per inch will make the letters look more detailed. Thicker yarn gives a less polished look.
Try a test strip with two colors and a letter or two to understand what this project would entail. If you can manage this, go for it.
I did my grandson's name in a scarf and mittens, so I really suggest a ton of patience. It was worth doing. He loved it.

You could create this by illusion or shadow knitting. Instructions here -- http://thestormmoon.blogspot.com/2007/05/dark-mark-illusion-scarf-pattern.html

Good Luck!
