I'm guessing that much like how we write (cursive) the doubleU looked curvy a long time ago when it was first named.
Here's a better question. Which sentence is correct:
1) Please spell it with a "M"
or
2) Please spell it with an "M".
A or AN? It's a consonant but SOUNDS like a vowel when spoken....
HMMMM?

in french it is pronouched double vey or double v, not sure if writing comes into it as when we write w it looks more like uu well mine does. I always thought about that, but many different factors have influenced change in languages, so over time in english it has just become double u.

At one time (Old English), the letter U was written as a V except that the left side was straight up and down and the letter W was developed as two of those put together and thus was named.

In ancient Rome, the letter V functioned as the letter U, hence, the term DOUBLE U.

nicely, I recommend, it would desire to go the two way. My Ws appear like double Us, yet some people upload a pointy factor on that muhfucka and it appears like double Vs. it is likewise based on font.
