I am attending a seminar at the HERDSA2005 Conference Venue from 10 August till 13th August
and do not want to be travelling too far to get there each day

A friend and I sat in Manning Bar one afternoon counting, from memory, the pubs within 15 minutes brisk walk from the University. There are more than 50 of them. It would take you about 20 minutes to walk from Central Station to the university and about 5 minutes on the bus. There are many hotels in all price ranges around Central.
The seminar organisers should be able to book you into somewhere convenient in your price range, there are plenty of hotels around.

I travelled to Sydney not long ago. I needed a hotel close to my family. I searched and booked through a website called http://www.need2travel.com.au Not sure if it will help you. But they had heaps of different travel companies and hotel reviews. So you should be able to find the accommodation you are looking for.

If you talk to the organisers, usually they can arrange for you to stay on campus at the uni. I went to a seminar a few weeks ago, and I found that out from someone from WA who went to the same seminar. This was at the women's collage.
